Yeah..... a "Pilot" was onboard the Dali when it took down the Key Bridge too. You should check into the ship owner and the incentive to build bigger ports for larger ships. Much love from Charm City - where nothing happens by accident.

Oooh, it has to suck when the humans involved didn't do anything especially wrong. I have dreams where the brakes on my car fail, I can only imagine if I was piloting a massive cargo carrier instead. In a narrow s-bend channel like that, the bridge design was a pretty awful choice.

Mybplainly difficult civil engineer dad was in college in 1960, but still would not have approved this bridge 😂. He had no faith in humans and would have expected this crash. His genetic report was half Swedish and the rest English so maybe his pesimisstic outlook was genetic as well?

I was wondering about the light... and for good reason -- sometimes it's light all the time in sweden. (Part of the 'land of the midnight sun') this is a sad story, and I feel like the swiss cheese model applies. Mistakes were made that made other mistakes more likely, that wound up in catastrophe. Nobody really saw it coming -- my bet is the guy had done the run a bunch of times before (even at night), and was confident in his abilities, but didn't realize his abilities were irrelevant because of the ice in the rudder that nobody knew about. I think it's actually the bridge and the designers that made it that are most at fault here. This was an accident waiting to happen, and just like the recent one in Baltimore, losing the ability to steer was what killed the bridge. This is sad and I don't think anyone other than them could have prevented this from happening at some point.

Seeing the photo of the bridge with a ship passing under, my immediate reaction was that they should have built a suspension bridge to give greater clearance. How any engineer could have thought that an arch bridge in such a tight channel was a good ilea is just incomprehensible.

some people in the navy were doing HARD drugs in 1990. the bizarre narrative they tried to substantiate and their inhumane methodology. it is kinda strange to name someone who you have a strictly platonic relationship with as beneficiary of a high payout life insurance policy but trying to build a terrorist plot off of it is crazy. especially when that fact is all you have. the NIS was obscenely naive to think they could cobble together such a slapdash story to cover the asses of the naval brass and have the public believe it. every other disaster of this magnitude where the military was potentially liable, was examined multiple times with an excruciatingly thorough and critical eye by official inquiries and private investigations. the NIS story wouldve always been subverted. The NIS mustve found leftover stockpiles of dexedrine from vietnam and started hitting it hard.

I remember it happening, seeing it on the TV news. It was ghastly. IMHO, the bridge was a disaster waiting to happen. The way it was built, it was only a matter of time before such an accident would occur. The blame should be on the constructors.

This particular disaster piqued my interest because my nephew is ready to be trained as a pilot in Galveston/Houston. He’s worked on pilot boats for several years now and I believe he’s currently a first or second mate. I truly fail to understand why anyone would ever pilot a ship in declining visibility conditions in the middle of the night! Was profit margin so important that waiting a few hours for daylight was going to make or break the transport company or the companies having their goods transported? Because if that was the case, they immediately went bankrupt when the ship was destroyed and the surviving cargo couldn’t be delivered. Which obviously didn’t happen. All they did was kill 8 people and cause suffering for their surviving family members and friends.

@@AlbertHess-xy7ky, yeah, that exists now, but in 1980, we were all jealous of Robert Wagner’s TV character Jonathon Hart who had a phone in his car. Since the character was a millionaire, it was out of the reach of ordinary citizens. But we also know that technology can fail. If the conditions are pushing the limits of your technology, it’s better to wait for them to improve.

9:35 - I recommend that you either use checked sources or leave out translated terms altogether. The term _omvänd_ means "reverse", "turned", "inverted" or "converted," suggesting that they should make a 180° turn or flip the boat on its axis. The term you looking for is _bakåt_ ("backwards") or _backa_ ("back up, reverse").

Greetings from Uddevalla! As others have mentioned this was a huge accident here at the time. To add, Uddevalla had one of the biggest ports and dockyards in Sweden at the time, and much of the Swedish merchant marine were holed up in the area outside Tjörn and Orust during WW2. The dockyard went out of business in the 80s.
